They say the beginning is the hardest part
A while ago, I wrote about wanting to start growing my own plants. And so reading people’s posts in this community really inspired me to actually and finally take action. I'm always amazed at how consistent and patient people are in their gardening journey. For such a long time, I doubted myself could do the same. But if I didn't try, I'd never know, right?
I need a “nothing to lose” spirit to actually get started. Perhaps that’s the reason why I chose to buy these affordable seed packages online. For about $1.50, I got 13 small packs of different vegetable seeds. There are bok choy, cucumber, cayenne pepper, tomato, mustard greens, celery, and even NPK + a polybag as a bonus.
I’m a complete beginner when it comes to growing anything, so I don’t really know if perhaps seeds also have different qualities(?) Because I wonder how these packs of seeds could be so cheap??
Anyway, after the seeds arrived, I went to a plant shop to buy some soil. They sell a package of "organic growing media" containing soil, cocopeat, burnt husks, and animal manure. Can you guess how much each package cost?
It's only IDR5.000 which is less than $0.5, how is this even possible?🤣 I mean, the package is not that small so I thought it would cost me much more. I bought another package of husk as an addition that day, and then went home to start planting my seeds.
Because I didn't want to lose out if my first gardening attempt failed haha, I chose to plant everything in polybags. I know that polybags are way cheaper than pots of course, but I would never expect that it costs IDR4.000 (around $0.25) for 10 pieces. That's about the same price as the coffee sachet I always buy lol😂
But the next time I went to the plant shop again, I actually bought the pots. They sell the regular size for IDR4.000 and IDR5.000 for a slightly bigger one. Once again, it costs less than $0.5, which is very affordable.
I planted several types of seeds, but not everything I got, due to limited space. So far I’ve planted cucumbers, bok choy, tomatoes, cayenne peppers, eggplant, and basil. I will share them later if I have some lucks to actually growing them properly lol because somehow I know I’ll fail😁
BUT! I got the feeling that I’ll try it again even if it does fail hehe. For now, I'm saving myself from disappointment by spending less than $2 every time I go to the plant store🤣
I really wish I’m being able to be an active writer in this community because that means I don’t give up my gardening journey😁
Anyway, please let me know if seeds also have certain "qualities" that affect their growth beyond the water and heat factors of a region? I'd really appreciate any feedback or any related insight :)
Thanks for reading as always, hivers!
