The harder the wood the slower it is likely for roots to form. Sometimes these may only form by the next spring. It is crucial to not let the shoots dry out which they are highly susceptible to.
Layering is another set of methods that can be more successful than creating cuttings since the shoot or branch retains its connection to the mother plant and hence nutrient and water supply while it is forming new roots.
