There are two opposing ethical theories in philosophy - utilitarianism and deontology. The former claims that the good of the majority outweighs that of the minority. So in judging which action is morally right or wrong, utilitarians weigh the outcome of the action. If majority of the people will benefit from the action, then it would be judged good but if it will favour the minority, it would be judged bad.
For the latter, the act itself is very important irrespective of whoever it favours. Whether majority or minority, the good or bad or the act lies in the act itself.
The utilitarian position can be liking to the democratic settings we have today where the demands of the majority determine that of the minority. No matter how genuine the minority's view might be, the majority always decide their fates.
In a real life scenario, you will be poised to ask which decision to make when the question of majority and minority is asked. Let's look at one of such scenarios:
Imagine that a runaway train is on track to kill five railroad workers. You’re standing next to a switch that can re-route the train to a different track, saving the lives of five people. But here’s the problem: If you do re-route the train, a single worker on the new route will be hit by the train.
The question to ask now is on worthiness of human lives. If the lives of the majority is more important to that of the minority (the single person)?
For the utilitarian, you will be saving 5 people compared to a single person. To the deontologists, the act of killing is bad irrespective of the number (s) involved.
Perhaps, you are also thinking saving five people is more plausible and rational to saving a single life but the question we will always ask is if their lives worth more compared to that of a single life.
For the record, no 'needs' is superior be it that of the majority or minority. Every human needs is important and should be treated as such.
We are all in this together and the earlier we understand that our needs are unique, the better for us to make the world a better place for all. A world where everybody is important should be preferred to one where the crowd decide for the few.
