Society is made up of people with social interactions and common goals. It is an institution that is based on contract with the sole purpose of developing humans and their environment.
There is no society without human beings. The idea of society suggests it is occupied by living human beings. Another reason for its creation is for peaceful coexistence among the citizens.
But has there been a peaceful society? Societies are often divided by irrelevant issues. Most times, these issues could be avoided but we are often clouded by sentiment for our groups, statuses, age differences and others.
Among the problems above, tribalism appears to be the most prevalent one. Growing up, i heard about the incident in Mile 12 area of Lagos, Nigeria between the Hausa and the Yoruba people. This led to death of many in the area.
Tribalism is the state of being organized in or an advocate for a tribe or tribes. Tribalism may also refer in popular cultural terms to a way of thinking or behaving in which people are loyal to their social group. Source
While tribalism is the popular and noticeable one among these vices in the society, there are issues of in and out groups. Issues of people forming caucus among themselves, clicks, and 'goons'. You will be added to a group of rich people if you are rich or a rich man introduce you to other rich men.
People also form clicks of 'like minds'. These people automatically form their own community and will be ready to fight for their 'own' (whatever that means). Their members enjoy some 'privileges' which are either protection from 'enemies', opposition or simply for revenge.
Even at workplace, people form caucus and when they sit together as group, they exempt themselves from the general workers and are always ready to defend 'their own'.
These are the realities of today's societies. Societies of sub societies where people are divided by uncommon goals. Hardly is there a place in the world without tribal war or intra-group clashes.
It is surprising that we have clashes almost everywhere in the world. One state will defend members of its state. It does not matter whether that is where you originally came from (we have state of origin in Nigeria for instance), they just support 'their own'.
With the above, it is clear that we have tribal crimes and clashes among groups. Is there a solution to these problems? Is it possible to transcend this apparent reality of our present day society?
The first thing in this world for me is humanity. Provided you are a human, i am with you. We need to transcend this problem that divide us. We need to put humanity first before any tribe, state or group. We need to understand that none of us chose our parents, state of origin or birth, or country. So why defend what you did not choose? You could have been born in another state or country and you will still be supporting them. So why support this present one by fighting fellow human beings?
Do you see us overcoming these issues of tribal and group clashes resulting to death? Your opinion would be appreciated.
Thanks for your time. Your boy the philosopher
