In the last few weeks this bush has flowered, and eventually these flowers will form small cherry fruits. Maybe not this year, but eventually it should when its ready. I have two of these bushes, known as Hansen bush cherries. I got these plants a year ago and they are getting adjusted to their new environment. With the amount of chill hours we get here in North Georgia they should do well at fruiting. And having two of them should help out making stronger fruit sets.
Really curious what these Hansen bush cherries taste like, some say they arent all that great raw. Others say you need to make a jam out of it. So we shall see, if they arent all that great raw its okay. I have four other cherry trees that should produce tasty fruit to eat right off the plant. From what I have read there are other bush cherry varieties that taste better raw, but its okay.. Having a couple just for jam would be great soo. So its all good if they end up being a little funky without cooking them down.
Starting off in the video I pan across the small trunk of the bush, showing its numerous flowers blooming. One of bushes flowered last year but did not produce any fruit, we shall see by summer if this year it indeed produces fruit.
The tops of the plant has leaves forming, seems like its happy and just needs some time to mature before it can produce fruit. Right now the are only three feet or so tall. Though they can grow over six feet tall. The cherries themselves are smaller than a normal cherry tree, less meat on them and a big 'ol seed in the middle. Honestly I do not think I have ever eaten a bush cherry fruit, only the tree type.
My other bush cherry plant is a little smaller than the first one we saw, well I think its a bush cherry plant too. Though it did not flower when the other one did. So curious if they end up being the same plant after all. This one I am standing by got all its leaves eaten by caterpillars last year, but it has made a full recovery this year and I hope to protect it from nasty pests in the future.
