Dear gardeners in my last update about our balcony garden eleven days ago I announced my participation in the HIVE 2024 World Pumpkin Championship. These are the very first HIVE world championships and I am proud to present:
My pumpkins
Yesterday I finally had the time to get started with my pumpkin project. I hope I can catch up the time I hesitated. I planted 12-26 seeds on 6 spots in this growing kit and hope I can get the seeds to grow. The challenge on the balcony will be to guide the plant in the right direction. Ideally I can have 2-3 plants growing from my large pot into many smaller ones. I listened to who invited me to this challenge and planted butternut pumpkin seeds. These are the most robust when it comes to growing them on a balcony.
Certainly it will be a tough challenge to go for the biggest pumpkin, but maybe I can still go for the most pumpkins harvested or the most beautiful pumpkin of them all. I hope my followiers will help me with the latter.
I purchased a little growing kit and planted the seeds into some normal gardening soil. I hope they begin to sprout within the next 10-14 days and then I can take the 3 strongest and pot them in the large pot I bought for this purpose.
How do you like my gloves? I think they have a seventies vibe to them. All flowers!
This is how my pumpkins look right now after 24 hours of planting them.
Nothing changed from the outside.
The rest of the garden
is in a changing state. I planted some new seeds in the insect flower hotel, and I planted a few basil seeds next to the tomatoes.
The potatoe plants are growing like crazy and some start to loose their flowers. Soon the eraly harvest for potatoes will be on. I guess another 4-6 weeks.
The salad beads look sad right now but in a few weeks this will be an entirely different picture again.
The pepper will grow twice its size in the next 14 days and will land in the salad.
The random bee flower meadow turned out beautiful.
I tested on of the carrots and it was tiny but tasted like a carrot. I gues this will take a while and they also won't get that big. The pot is just to small.
The potato jungle is growing. I really have high hopes on the harvest here.
The giant 35 liter pot that will hold the butternut plants. It was a real bargain and I could buy it for sub 10€.
You want to be a champion too?
