Experts estimate in Germany that up to 200 babies a year suffer from brain damage from being shaken by parents, or male educators who lose control in a moment of weakness or exhaustion.
This came in a statement to the Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Health in the state of Baden-Württemberg, southern Germany, Purple Meles during her visit to Stuttgart University Hospital.
"It is because the baby loses basic opportunities for growth," Meles warned on Monday.
Representatives of the German state government of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Stuttgart University Hospital and representatives of TK Health Insurance participated in the campaign to educate parents about these erroneous behaviors.
"A few seconds of shaking is enough to cause serious injury to the baby's life," said Markus Blankenberg, director of pediatric neurology at the University Hospital. "The neck muscles cannot carry the big head of the baby during shaking.
Blanckenberg noted that the shaking could cause the baby to have brain hemorrhages, epileptic seizures and serious disabilities that would last him throughout his life. He said the exact number of injuries caused by shaking infants was unknown to researchers.
The goal of the campaign is to provide early assistance to parents, said the director of the Stuttgart-based SBS Pediatric Center, Andreas Oberle, adding that parents feel helpless and abandoned when their child cries too much, and early help and awareness can ease the situation and affect Positively on the sensitive education between mother, father and child.
