Previously if I clicked a top level comment from my Replies page it would show the post with all comments and the clicked one highlighted. It only went to a comment only page when it was another level deep and would show the comment it was replying too.
See this example where there's no link to a parent comment. I preferred the previous version so I could see all the comments on a new post via this route and a single click.
Here's another replying to a comment I made, but I can't see what I said.
Context is important and we want to get to it with a minimum of clicks.
The problem posts can be those with hundreds of comments as you end up doing a lot of scrolling. I can appreciate it's hard to find the right balance. Collapsing comment threads by default may make it easier to see what's is important to you at the time. We can manually collapse a thread with the little [-] that appears next to the flag on the top right of each comment.
It's these little design features that really make a site usable or not. I realise opinions will vary on what is good and someone has to make the call on what goes in.
