Guitarists may be aware of this tag from Twitter and Facebook. I think it should be on Steemit too, so let's see how many cool guitars we can get. I know loves his Telecasters and will want to join in.
I have to admit mine is not a Fender or even a Squier. A couple of years back I decided I would have a guitar made for me. I had always like the simplicity of the Telecaster and so I got in touch with Steve at Benford Guitars. I've never met him, but I had seem some of his work via other members of the Six String Bliss community. has one too. Steve did a great job making what I wanted. You can see more pictures and the full spec here
Special features include:
- Kinman Broadcaster pickups that a friend was able to supply.
- A secret pick holder on the back.
- Strap locks.
- Locking tuners.
- A 'kill switch' for stutter effects.
It's a lovely guitar that gets a lot of nice comments. I can recommend Steve Benford. His prices are really reasonable.
History of the Telecaster
For those who don't know the Telecaster was the first mass-produced solid electric guitar. Leo Fender was not a guitarist, but he was great at designing practical instruments. It was made to be cheap to produce with its simple body style and bolt-on neck. The first models appeared in 1950 and it's still in production. It was originally called the Broadcaster in honour of the TV age. There was a dispute over the name, so it was changed.
Players
James Burton is one of the great session players who played a lot with Elvis. He was an early user of light strings to make bending easier.
The guitar has an association with country music, but Jimmy Page used it for most of the early Led Zeppelin recordings.
It can have that twangy country sound too, as Jerry Donahue shows. His bends are amazing.
They've also be used for punk and other forms of rock. I saw Wilko Johnson play a gig in Germany many years ago when he still had hair.
A prominent modern player is John 5 who plays with Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie and many others. He has a huge collection of Teles and I've heard he has one from every year they have been produced. Some of those must have cost a fortune. He makes cool videos too.
