Some years ago I was thinking of learning to play electric bass as I thought it would give me a better chance of joining a band than by playing guitar. I didn't end up playing much bass, but it led me down a rabbit hole to a genre I didn't realise existed.
Poking around the internet led me to a podcast about playing bass by Jeff Schmidt. I learnt some theory from that, but I also found out what an amazing musician he is. He plays left-handed, but it's as if you just flipped a right-handed bass, so the strings are reversed. He uses various tunings and sometimes plays 'piccolo bass', which has lighted strings tuned up. On his Outre album I think all the songs are just him, with no loops and it's stunning. He's done some more experimental albums with synths and noise, but I'm not aware of any solo work in recent years.
Via Jeff's podcast I discovered British bassist Steve Lawson. He used to be based in London and I went to several of his gigs. When I first saw him he was doing a lot of work with his wife Lobelia that included some covers. These days he's doing a lot of improvised pieces, but he's always been a big user of loops and uses them in interesting ways. He puts out a lot of music via Bandcamp and runs a subscription service where fans get all his new music. He's been generally experimental with social media and would probably love Steemit.
One of the gigs I went to by Steve was co-headlined by Michael Manring. They did some solo pieces each and also improvised some duets. It's amazing to see such incredible musicians bouncing ideas off each other and creating beautiful music on the spot. Michael has a system that lets him re-tune the bass during a tune. He also has the deepest cutaway I've seen on any stringed instrument.
If you start looking around Youtube for solo bass you will find lots more amazing playing. The bass is in some ways like the cello in being closer to the human vocal range than guitar. See what you can find.
