Thank you, , for nomination :*
Today I'd like to nominate:
Disclaimer: I'm not usually prone to sentimentalism (at least not on social media) but I've been listening to "Šal od svile" by a New Wave group Haustor and the shit made me #woke (I suggest listening to it), so I may be a bit too poetical. But, as the wise men say, #yolo.
I've come to the end of this challenge and, usually, I like to save the best for the last. However, as I also like plot twists, this is not exactly what's going to happen: objectively, this is by far the lowest quality photo I've put up as a part of this challenge. I don't even know when or with what it was taken – I found it in an album, which I named “The Seaside” and there are no dates, but I suppose it was roughly 2012, which would mean that it was taken with a Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, or some other used phone my dad lent me at the time. However, this photo may be my personal favourite, because it has a special meaning to me.
My family has been going on Summer vacations to Povljana, Pag since 2003. I don’t really like it there, because there are literally no people my age in our building, so I have no one to hang out with, and, since the village is very small, there’s not really a place to visit. During the day, therefore, I mostly slept or went swimming. During the night, I went for a walk with my family and we usually watched a movie or played a card game. And then, when everybody was asleep, I would disregard my fear of crickets (and there is a tone of huge, brown ones in Povljana; that would probably be the most loathsome thing about it), sit on the balcony and watch this exact spot. I used to call it Israel, because that’s how I imagined it looks (I have no idea why, it’s not like I actively thought about what Israel might look like, but OK). I spent nights gazing at this vast nothingness of the stone and bushes and daydreaming – especially if I was in love, or sad (which usually came hand in hand). I would (obviously) take some time to appreciate it during the day as well, but during the night is when the magic really happened. I would sit there, alone, but note lonely, and feel united with the world. At peace. Funny how random things affect us, isn’t it? Makes you think.
I haven’t been to Povljana in almost 3 years and I can’t say I miss it – but I miss this place. I always wonder whether anyone else ever noticed it, this particular little spot, and learned to appreciate its beauty. Beauty really is in the eyes of the beholder, and it really does appear where you least expect it. You’ve just got to look for it.
