I hope you all have a wonderful and productive day, filled with positive energy and those little moments that brighten up the day. Mine, it seems, is going to be pretty busy today, because in addition to my usual work routine, I also need to pick up some items we urgently need. But I’ll tell you about that in another post, because today I want to share how this day went—it started off very calmly and ended up putting us to the test.
Leaving home early is something we always enjoy. It lets us get going without rushing, without the stress of traffic, and also enjoy that beautiful weather the island sometimes gives us in the early morning hours. When the sky is clear and the breeze is gentle, you feel like nature is with you every step of the way, every mile of the journey. It’s a gift I’m always grateful for.
Les deseo un día maravilloso y productivo, lleno de buenas energías y de esos pequeños momentos que alegran la jornada. El mío, por lo visto, será bastante atareado hoy, porque además de cumplir con mi rutina habitual de trabajo, también debo pasar por unos productos que necesitamos con urgencia. Pero de eso les hablaré en otra de mis publicaciones, porque hoy quiero contarles cómo transcurrió este día que comenzó muy tranquilo y terminó poniéndonos a prueba.
Salir temprano de casa es algo que siempre disfrutamos. Nos permite avanzar sin prisa, sin el estrés del tráfico, y además aprovechar ese clima hermoso que a veces nos regala la isla en las primeras horas de la mañana. Cuando el cielo está despejado y la brisa es suave, uno siente que la naturaleza acompaña cada paso, cada kilómetro del camino. Es un regalo que siempre agradezco.
Our first task of the day was to perform our routine maintenance on the main pool at the Sunsol Unik Hotel: chlorination, disinfection, and parameter checks. Upon arrival, as always, we were greeted with the warmth and kindness that characterizes the hotel staff. It’s an environment where you feel welcome, and that makes any job more enjoyable.
Nuestra primera tarea del día era realizar la rutina de trabajo en el tanque principal del hotel Sunsol Unik; cloración, desinfección y verificación de parámetros. Al llegar, como siempre, nos recibieron con esa calidez y amabilidad que caracteriza al personal del hotel. Es un ambiente donde uno se siente bienvenido, y eso hace que cualquier labor sea más llevadera.
We started our shift as usual. Everything was going perfectly, the levels were within expectations, and we were almost finished with the inspection when we received an urgent call from the laundry. The linens for that shift were coming out stained, and that, of course, is a serious problem for a hotel. They asked us to go down and check the filter, so we stopped what we were doing and headed down immediately.
Comenzamos a trabajar con normalidad. Todo marchaba perfecto, los niveles estaban dentro de lo esperado y ya casi dábamos por concluida la revisión cuando nos llamaron con cierta urgencia desde lavandería. La lencería del turno estaba saliendo manchada, y eso, por supuesto, es un problema serio para un hotel. Nos pidieron que bajáramos a revisar el filtro, así que dejamos lo que estábamos haciendo y nos dirigimos de inmediato.
When we arrived, we noticed that some of the linens had a beige tint, as if something in the process were altering the color. We had to check the entire system, from the washing machines—of which there are quite a few—all the way to the filter, to determine where the problem lay. After a thorough inspection, we discovered that the filter valve was closed. A new employee on the previous shift had tampered with the system without knowing exactly how it worked and left the valve closed.
At the hotel, no one other than maintenance staff or us should touch those filters. Improper handling can cause serious damage: explosions, implosions, or pressure failures. Luckily, we were there just in time to prevent a bigger problem. The new guy would be called out of his break to better explain his duties and prevent something like this from happening again.
As a result of this mishap, the filter cartridges became saturated and now need to be replaced sooner than planned. That replacement was scheduled for next month, but it can no longer wait.
Al llegar, vimos que parte de la lencería tenía un tono beige, como si algo en el proceso estuviera alterando el color. Tuvimos que revisar toda la instalación, desde las lavadoras —que no son pocas— hasta el filtro, para determinar dónde estaba la falla. Después de un buen rato de revisión, descubrimos que el filtro tenía una llave cerrada. Un trabajador nuevo, en el turno anterior, había manipulado el sistema sin saber exactamente cómo funcionaba y dejó la llave cerrada.
En el hotel, nadie que no sea del área de mantenimiento o nosotros debería tocar esos filtros. Una mala manipulación puede causar daños graves; explosiones, implosiones o fallas por presión. Por suerte, estábamos allí justo a tiempo para evitar un problema mayor. Al muchacho nuevo lo llamarían de su descanso para explicarle mejor sus funciones y evitar que algo así vuelva a ocurrir.
Como consecuencia de este percance, las cargas del filtro se saturaron y ahora será necesario cambiarlas antes de lo previsto. Ese reemplazo estaba programado para el mes entrante, pero ya no puede esperar.
Once we were done at the hotel, we had to go to the H2O office in town to get a quote for the new loads. We took 4 de Mayo Avenue, one of the most prominent streets in Porlamar. We passed in front of one of the tallest residential buildings on the avenue, “La Torre de Mayo.” I took the opportunity to snap a few photos, because I always like to capture those little details along the way that I can later share with you.
Al terminar en el hotel, debíamos ir al local de H2O en la ciudad para solicitar el presupuesto de las nuevas cargas. Tomamos la avenida 4 de Mayo, una de las más significativas de Porlamar. Pasamos frente a uno de los edificios residenciales más altos de la avenida, “la Torre de Mayo”. Aproveché para tomar algunas fotografías, porque siempre me gusta capturar esos detalles del camino que luego puedo compartir con ustedes.
We arrived at the shop, asked for a quote, and left. It was extremely hot, and we were almost out of water, so we decided to go home and rest for a bit.
That’s how our day went—one that seemed simple but ended with a complication that, fortunately, has a solution.
