Purchasing spices and "window" shopping weren't the only highlights of our visit to De Bazaar in Beverwijk, as we needed to "fuel up" for our next appointment after seeing as much as we could of the shopping village. Luckily for us, there was enough choice in variety in the present food courts.
First, we tried some Afghan Sheer Yakh shaved ice - yes, in winter, what was I thinking? I guess I really wanted to experience its flavors 🙃 - which consisted crushed pistachios, almonds, thick cream and possibly rosewater and other herbs.
The ice was unlike any ice cream I've ever tasted before: it tasted full and creamy with a type of fruity freshness. It definitely rejuvenized us, in spite of having a cold desert on a cold rainy day.
Because of it being around lunchtime, we were also on the lookout for a hearty and filling meal to get us through the rest of the day. We opted for a shoarma stand and a rotishop. After we already placed our order, the Yemeni restaurant came into my view and I decided that we should try their food on our next visit.
A kapsalon and a rotiroll were our food of choice and we decided to start with the first one and leave the rotiroll for on-the-go as it was neatly wrapped up. The kapsalon was fresh, creamy, crunchy and well seasoned. It was more filling than we anticipated and left the rotiroll for the next day, because of that.
At home we also realized how massive the rotiroll was and how it was filled with enough meat, potatoes and long beans in curry and compared it to what we would get in Suriname at a famous roti franchise. This was way better in quality and price ratio.
