There Once Was
I thought there would always be a better day,
Another way to overcome all we have done to hold us back.
I believed we'd find the answer to close the gaps between us,
and open a world of potential unrivalled.
A game of sliding doors with a hundred near misses to our destruction,
Yet we'll never know how close we may have come to our salvation.
We look to the mountain tops and depths of the sea,
we look to the stars to guide us to fulfilment and greatness.
And with those same eyes searching for inspiration,
We judge and torment to feed insatiable insecurities.
Sweep us clear away from the playing board please,
For we no longer belong to the earth, sky or trees.
Chasing the waterfalls and the clouds above,
And a fantastical love that we could never possibly hold.
We want the feeling to last for an eternity we can never know,
as our limits are overflowing with the irrelevancies we cherish.
With filled regrets that all efforts diluted and dissipated away,
As I turn and walk slowly with nothing left to convince me to stay.
We would never be enough for each other in time,
as we all want too much and are unwilling to provide.
Learn from our mistakes and those of others we have been scolded,
but a lesson so simple we have been unable to live.
