🇪🇸 ~ Esa es una pregunta que me hago a menudo, cuando recuerdo a las personas mayores de nuestra familia que ya no están presentes, especialmente, me hago esta pregunta cada vez que veo una foto de mi abuela materna, a la que recuerdo todos los días con amor y admiración a partes iguales.

🇺🇸 ~ That’s a question I often ask myself when I think of the older members of our family who are no longer with us. In particular, I ask myself this question every time I see a photo of my maternal grandmother, whom I remember every day with equal parts love and admiration.

A medida que la vida adulta sigue, cada vez con mas frecuencia me encuentro preguntándome qué pensaría ella de esto o aquello, qué opinaría, cuál seria su mejor consejo, y también cual sería su juicio. Mi abuela fue una persona extraordinaria de carácter regio a la que debo muchas de las cosas positivas en mi personalidad; su ausencia nos pesa, nos hace mucha falta, la extrañamos todos los días y la nombramos en voz alta.

As I go through life as an adult, I find myself wondering more and more often what she would think of this or that, what her opinion would be, what her best advice would be, and also what her judgment would be. My grandmother was an extraordinary person with a regal character, to whom I owe many of the positive traits in my personality; her absence weighs heavily on us, we miss her terribly, we think of her every day, and we speak her name aloud.

Esta foto me gusta muchísimo, sigo organizando álbumes familiares que siguen pendientes por digitalizar, y hasta el momento las fotos de este cumple años es de mis favoritas, porque así es como vive mi abuelita en mi memoria, morena, de ojos claros con grandes lentes finos, de cabello corto ensortijado y usando ese traje color oscuro de letras doradas que tanto me gustaba, siempre olía a perfume y a talco, y siendo la menor de 10 hermanos, todos los tíos abuelos que pude conocer tenían una personalidad súper risueña, eran todos personas muy alegres.

I really love this photo. I’m still working on organizing family albums that haven’t been digitized yet, and so far, the photos from this birthday are among my favorites, because that’s how I remember my grandma: dark-skinned, with light eyes and big, thin-framed glasses, short curly hair, and wearing that dark-colored dress with gold lettering that I loved so much. She always smelled of perfume and talcum powder, and as the youngest of 10 siblings, all the uncles and aunts I got to know had such cheerful personalities—they were all very happy people.

Estas fotos también me recuerdan lo mucho que le gustaba el dulce, ella solía guardar en su closet un espacio con galletas que siempre compartía en la merienda con sus nietos. También le gustaba el calabazate (un dulce criollo), los pasteles sinfonía y el quesillo, que le quedaba espectacular igual que el dulce de lechosa para navidad. Definitivamente, la generación de mi abuelita y mis tíos abuelos es una que se hace extrañar, una de las ultimas generaciones elegantes.

These photos also remind me of how much she loved sweets; she used to keep a stash of cookies in her closet that she always shared with her grandchildren at snack time. She also loved calabazate (a traditional sweet), sinfonía cakes, and quesillo, which she made spectacularly, just like the dulce de lechosa for Christmas. My grandmother’s and great-uncles’ generation is definitely one we miss—one of the last elegant generations.
