The mulching of debris continues, and I’m making progress down through the layers of branches and leaves. This is where I’m getting into the good stuff; many of the branches in this layer have mushrooms or other signs of fungal mycelium which is making me very happy.
So far, ive been viewing the branches as either mulch for around the not yet existing raised beds, or as wood pellets for the stove, depending on how thick and dry they are.
Now there is a 3rd category, and that’s material that will be used as a base layer beneath the soil of the raised beds, creating a kind of hugelkulture layer that will feed the soil in those beds for years to come, and the mycelium will help with that tremendously!
I’ve already accumulated over 600liters of mulch ready for use, plus a separate pile of dry branches for the fire, and there are still lots of branches buried in the overgrown area. I expect these will mostly have some fungal growth on them, so my garden will be getting a heck of a boost.
