Years ago a buddy of mine invited me to join him on a diving trip to Belize. Being an avid diver I jumped at the chance since some of the most fantastic reefs in the Caribbean are found along it's coastline. I really didn't know much about the country before my trip but I was blown away by just how beautiful it is! Green rainforests everywhere, beautiful beaches, and crystal clear water. A very cool place. The diving was truly amazing, the reefs and wildlife are gorgeous. If you love diving you don't want to miss it!
One very interesting fact about Belize is that the official language is English despite the fact that it is smack dab in the middle of central America. To it's north is Mexico and to it's west and south is Guatemala which are both Spanish speaking nations. It turns out that the British settled it and then every time a war broke out with Spain they would fight over it, but the British prevailed. It used to be called British Honduras until they achieved self government in 1964 and changed the name to Belize. They gained independence in 1981 as a constitutional monarchy now with King Charles III as their king.
While I was there I picked up a few coins like I usually do when I travel. The one I'm sharing today is interesting because first off it doesn't have the image of the monarch like you would normally see in British territories. Secondly it was a commemorative coin but since it wasn't in a capsule it did have a little wear. It features two scarlet macaws on it which I though was a very cool!
About the coin:

Here is a scarlet macaw picture from Wikipedia:
They are a really pretty bird, and are found in the wild throughout central America as well as many are kept as pets in captivity.
This coin was a great souvenir of a very fun trip. I love collecting coins from central and south America so it was a great addition to my collection. I have a couple others I'll share at some point but this was my favorite from that diving adventure.
