New beginnings always come with mixed feelings, and since I'll be starting an office job tomorrow, I felt excited but also anxious at the same time. The two feelings always coexist because even though I have looked forward to this opportunity, I'm starting to feel a bit intimidated by the prospect of working in an entirely new setting.
Earlier on today, I decided to go to the office just to see my boss but mostly to view the office space I'll be using. Unfortunately, the day did not begin as I had anticipated; I ended up spending over five hours at the reception area waiting for the boss to show up, a waiting period that was exhausting and made worse by the conditions of the reception, which had poor ventilation and was nearly suffocating at some point.
At some point, I started feeling agitated as the receptionist constantly assured me to be patient and, in my mind, I began to wonder that is what I would be dealing with when I start working there. Patience isn't my strongest quality, and so the idea of constant waiting to get things done made me slightly uncomfortable and for a moment I started wondering about what kind of environment I'd be working in.
Finally the boss showed up, who also double as my older brother, and we walked straight to his office. In his office, there was a fan and air conditioner working, so I did not waste any time before loosen my long sleeve shirt just to get some fresh air and cooling off from the earlier waiting session at the reception. After the normal greeting and catch up conversation, he requested the receptionist to show me the office space I would be using. The company business is in a logistics sector, and I will be recording dispatches and collections using a computer; a task I can handle, so the work seemed a little reassuring to me.
I went back after viewing the space to see the boss and made a very simple request, which was to be allowed to carry my laptop with me for work. I said it was so I could charge it at the office, since they have stable electricity supply due to the solar system they have installed, but also to help ease into working efficiently which he granted.
As I sit here and think about the day, I can't help but feel nervous that I'm starting something new in a line of work I have no experience in. Yet, at the same time, there's a sense of excitement because it feels like more than just starting work; it feels like moving forward.
Tomorrow will be my first official day at this new place and even though I do not know what to expect, I do know it is a positive step towards something new, and sometimes, that is what really matters.
A new day has come, and with it, a new journey begins.
