"King Leonidas of Sparta and a force of 300 men fight the Persians at Thermopylae in 480 B.C."
I am a big fan of epic larger than life movies. Troy, Gladiator, and Braveheart are among my favorites.
300 is the first movie I saw with Gerad Butler, who I have since become a big fan of. I believe this is Zack Snyder's best-directed movie.
Trailer
300 is the story of 300 Spartan warriors standing against 300,000 attacking soldiers. As unbelievable as it sounds, the story is amazing following King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) from childhood to King.
The filming techniques and unique narration in 300 are legendary. Spartans are a tough and powerful race, and they will not go down easily.
"The world will know that free men stood against a tyrant, that few stood against many, and before this battle was over, even a god-king can bleed."
- King Leonidas

I have yet to find a movie that has challenged 300 in my top spot for epic movies.
Facts about the history of the famous battle
The famous battle took place back in 480 B.C. and is referred to as the Battle of Thermopylae. There was more like 7,000 Greeks who fought on the side of the Spartans and although history says there was over 1,000,000 Persians, it was more likely around 100,00-150,000. The battle lasted around seven days and Leonidas stayed to defend with 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians while the rest retreated.
