Today's VINYL OF THE DAY pick is one of the greatest contributions to the world of jazz fusion, Miles Davis' Bitches Brew. The 70s were an interesting time for jazz, and this record is one of the key reasons why. While Miles wasn't the first to combine jazz with the avant-garde, rock, or funk, he certainly did it in a way that was genre-defining and unforgettable.
The performances on this record are exploitative, psychedelic, and meditative. It's a complicated but deeply satisfying listen. Easily one of Miles' most mind-bending albums, which it owes greatly to the record's lengthy personnel list, which I recommend everyone reading this post takes a look at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitches_Brew#Personnel
Miles and producer Teo Macero went as far as to double up on electric piano players, drummers, and even bassists on some tracks, placing their performances into the far-left or right of the mix. The final result of which is this panoramic, enveloping listening experience I've encountered on few other albums in the jazz field and beyond.
