My intentions are set on training you to be an
Obedient companion for me through my fading years.
I sense the fear in your eyes as you peer up from
The passenger seat of my truck on the short drive
From the shelter to my home and what is now yours.
I nearly swerve off the road as I note your heartbreaking
Posture, shivering in your freshly washed coat of
Sand colored softeness; you are simply too adorable over there.
Lifting you up and into my arms, I carry you to the
Side yard where the pond awaits its new champion.
There is a slight tilt to your tiny dog head; I smile and
Gently ruffle the fur behind your ear in encouragement.
As your timid exploration ensues, I can feel the hopeful
Wonder you are creating with each passing moment.
I dare not leave you unattended to fetch you a treat,
So I lead you into the hallway and ask that you stay.
Returning, I kneel to offer your reward for responding
As such; my insides are melting with your grateful stare.
And it is realized that I am the one who is in training.
