The ability to hold on to a piece of information temporarily in order to complete a task is specifically human. It causes certain regions of the brain to become very active, in particular the pre-frontal lobe.
There is a mental condition that I believe is common to everyone. I am yet to come by the name for this condition. It is the condition which involves forgetting a short term memory, but to recollect this memory, you either retrace yourself to the point where you last remembered that event, or you paint a mental picture of yourself in that place.
An Illustration:
You are in your living room, chatting with friends and you just decide to go get your bottle of groundnuts from your room. On getting to your room, probably you had a distraction on your way to the room, you just forget what you're in the room for. You begin to rack your brain so much but you do not remember. You imagine yourself back in the living room but you still do not get what's missing. It is then that you decide to go back to join your friends. As soon as you get to the living room, you remember that you wanted to get a bottle of groundnuts.
This happens to many people, if not everyone, but is there a name for it? I am just being curious so if you can shed more light on this condition, or tell what it's called, I as well as other readers will really appreciate it.
