Hi Everyone,
Saint Seiya was an old school anime which started in Japan in the late 1980s and it continued running for a very long time. Back in the days, it was one of the most popular animes and I remember my cousins would send figurines to us from Hong Kong as gifts. When we went back to visit, we also go some to take home so my my childhood memories had a bit of Saint Seiya here and there. In the early 90s, I remember watching the anime dubbed in Cantonese and the boys all seemed to like it. When I met hubby, he was into it a little but wasn't a huge fan like the boys in my family. For Valentines this year, I needed to be a little bit more creative and after a visit at one of the games shop, I found this cool Saint Seiya themed Monopoly set. We are definitely due for a new set as the current set is one I was given back in primary school.
The packaging was really pretty. Every friend who I sent to who knows about Saint Seiya thought it was a cool buy. So recently we had time and decided to open it up and play with the boys. If you look at the content, the markers, money, chance cards etc all have the Saint Seiya theme which was pretty cool. It's like all the childhood memories are coming back. So let's check out how it looks!
The box layout looks totally different from my set 20 years ago. There were slots of every token but the plastic felt light and flimsy. The bard itself was pretty well made and print of the board was bright and colourful. The boys were particular excited with all the character names but some of them were too hard to pronounce as they were still young especially BB M. No more "Mayfair", instead its "Athena". The colours of the houses are still the same so they kept it like the original.
The little tokens were a nice heavy metal sprayed in like a bronze colour with the Saint Seiya theme. The chance cards are now called Cosmos and Saints. The only thing I don't like about the new set is the money is no longer the plastic money, its all very thin paper which can get worn out very quickly if the game gets played a lot. Even the chance cards are on a thinner cardboard, I guess they have to cut costs somewhere for these sets.
So we started teaching the kids the adult monopoly as they normally play the kids version. This involves more counting of money, reading the cards and getting their heads around a bigger board. BB E didn't really need much help and was pretty switched on but BB M needs a bit of help with his numbers. The game lasted 2 hours (much longer than the kids version) but the kids loved it. The game play is the same as the traditional one just it was based on Saint Seiya. It's great how Monopoly now offers themed sets giving the game the extra kick with the theme they like. A tip is wait for sales before buying these sets, the original price is pretty expensive (only if you can wait .).
