I remember the first time I played Defender of the Crown (DotC) on Commodore 64. While I was not fortunate enough to have access to a Commodore Amiga, man my brain would have exploded back then if I did. That first experience with DotC was quite an experience. Then later on I picked up a copy on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and it was just as much fun, still frustrating as hell to fence with the guards, and graphically it was awesome. Now, there is a remake to celebrate the 40th Anniversary coming and it looks amazing too.
The Classic Plus New Collide in This Remaster
Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns will feature a few new modes. Retro Mode is apparently the original Commodore Amiga classic. There are some quality-of-life enhancements, unfortunately no information on what those enhancements are is available at the time of this writing.
Classic Mode is the Commodore Amiga but “reimagined” for modern gamers. This includes a new visual identity, new mechanics and other enhancements.
Kingdom Mode is the new take on the classic game. Maps are procedurally generated, new dice mechanics, unlockable abilities and more.
Get Ready to Joust Thy Enemy
According to Time Extension, Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns has been confirmed for Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, but not Nintendo Switch 1 or 2 (sorry Nintendo fans). This is great news for fans of the game.
If you are a fan of the original Defender of the Crown then you are probably already excited and cannot wait. I know I am excited and cannot wait. I loved the game on the Nintendo Entertainment System but the Commodore 64 version was prettier. I still played on the NES more due to the ease of enjoyment (and I always had my NES connected to the television).
