Currently it is snowing hard on this mid April day so I still hear the question asked if you can eat snow in a survival situation or not. Well, the answer depends on your situation and location.
There have been sad stories of people who died of hypothermia from eating snow during a blizzard situation. And others have survived by using snow as their only source of water.
If you are hiking or quite active during the day then a handful of snow is very refreshing and will help keep you hydrated. But if you are settling in at camp for the night or in a survival situation, stranded in the cold, do not eat the snow.
The difference comes from the amount of activity you are doing at the time and the outside temperatures.
For best results it is always safest to boil or melt the snow before drinking it. What happens if you drink cold snow water is that you will be lowering your internal body temperature. This is dangerous in an already bad situation and can kill you.
By heating up the snow to melt it first, you are getting your water and possibly saving your life. But do not put the snow close to your body in order to melt it either. This will reduce your temperature as well.
If you are in the mountains, snow is fine to eat or drink without boiling, again depending on your activity level. But closer to a city, use your best judgement about how clean the snow is. Clean snow only needs to be melted and warmed up a bit so it wont lower your body temperature.
If you are in doubt as to the cleanliness of the snow, then boil it fully for safety.
