Music is a huge part of my life. It has got me through some very difficult times in my life. Depending on what I am listening to, it can lift me out of that feeling of despair and carry me on a cloud to a place were I can be more at peace. Allowing me to seek and find any answers I may need.
Along with being in nature and writing, music has transformed my life.
When I was a child, I watched a lot of musicals, they were the soundtrack to my childhood. I am writing this as my daughter watches Mary Poppins. They brought to me a love of singing, and I would sing whenever anything got too much for me. When I needed to block out my parents endless arguing. I would sing and be transported. It's funny now watching these musicals with my daughters, it brings up mostly good memories but sometimes the flicker of a memory from another time. A sadness that is buried deep.
Music has this huge ability to heal.
Just sitting and playing the beat of your heart out on a drum, allowing yourself to get lost in that beat, it can really bring about calm and tranquillity. It is something that connects us all. With all the noise that surrounds us on a day to day basis that one beat can help to bring us back to ourselves. It tells us that beneath it all we are all the same.
Playing music allows us to express ourselves, when words are not enough or hard to find, music can be the language we use. Music knows no boundaries, it is so far reaching, at times it out passes spoken word.
In my, almost 40 years on this planet I have only met one person who told me they did not like music and to this day I still find that difficult to believe. Music is so many different things, to many different people. It can really fuel our imagination, it can bring so much passion into our lives, it can open up our hearts and lift our spirits. It can transport me from my adult years back to my teenage years.
And with music comes movement, allowing our bodies to really feel the music. Allowing our bodies to express themselves, to let ourselves go and get loss in that moment. To be free.
Music can slow us down, can speed us up, can help us feel more optimistic. It can help us to release emotions, it can carry us on those difficult days we can all experience.Music is a gift, it is something that we all carry within us. Asides from that one person I met years ago, it is something that all humans can say that they enjoy, it is something that unites us.
I would love to know what piece of music or what song has moved you?
I will leave you with some music that has and still does move me. The first is one that I have carried with me through the years. And the second is one that has come to me recently.
Enjoy
