Which one of the two do you want to practice, matrilineal or patrilineal? I'm from a patrilineal family, i.e. based on or tracing descent through the male line. But in India's Meghalaya state, there is a matrilineal society. They are the Khasi indigenous community.
According to news report, they are about to switch to patrilineal descent. Their elders are of the view that the absence of a strong foundation of male members, in the family, has caused more vulnerabilities and disintegration of families. Their leadership gathered together and appealed to the community people to switch to a patrilineal descent for the purpose of strengthening the familial bond.
A few years ago, I had a discussion about this topic with one of their scholars. The guy harped on the positive side of things one of which was "women empowerment". And he simply refused to acknowledge that patrilineal descent is more sound than matrilineal descent. But today... OK, lemme just share the news article to him. :)
