Not many people enjoy examination although it is usually required by an educational system. What we need is to minimise the negative effect and maximise the positive impact.
The examination-oriented education system can have the negative effects such as unhealthy competition and superficial learning. In other words, students tend to compete with one another to the extent of causing jealousy and frustration. Beside that, examination may cause students to memorise information without translating it into applicable knowledge.
Examination can have positive impact if it is well planned with good objectives. In other words, we should not emphasise too much the grade or marks to be given. Instead, we need to highlight what has been done well and area to be improved by gazing into the learning progress of students through their examination. Beside that, students should be encouraged to help one another rather than competing among themselves through examination. True enough the results of examination may only play a part in determining the success of the future undertaking of the graduates. Indeed, EQ has appeared to be more critical than IQ in determining the success of the people in our society today.
Once again, what is written above reiterates, “Learn to be a person first, then only learn to do thing.” In fact, a good result of examination may not even guarantee that the person is able to do thing accordingly.
