So I’ve been thinking a lot about social media lately. Although most but of us have at least one platform that we play around with...there’s still a stigma. People say we’re losing touch with actual communication. We post online or text instead of reaching out more organically. Basically technology is making us less personable.
I have a very different perspective. I have social anxiety. I was diagnosed at 15 with generalized anxiety...and I’ve worked through a lot of it. The social aspects still very much affect my daily life.
Social media gives me the ability to reach out, and “meet” people that i wouldn’t have the courage to speak to in person. It’s a way to feel people out. I can engage in conversions, debates, even arguements...without the fear of weighted judgment. I can post about experiences I’m having and even vent when unexpected life stuff gets me down...people have the option to read or skip over it...and that doesn’t affect me negatively at all!
Yes, I do realize I’m still going to be judged...but i don’t have as much fear of rejection as I would in a person to person setting.
So for people like me...living in the age of social media is a real blessing. I have already connected with so many different people from different cultures. How else would a shy girl from a small town get to do that?
