A nice sunny and warm ( but comfortable) Monday where I managed a decent trail run and another very scenic trail hike up in Spearfish Canyon with Lulu.
The morning cloud cover burned off quickly so it was nice and sunny when I started my run on the mountain bike trails course. Nice and relaxed running as my legs felt pretty good and I just wanted to put in some miles.
Not particularly hard running but I finished up with close to 4 miles so there's improvement.
The temperature was in the mid-80s when Lulu and I headed up into the canyon to try the Iron Creek Trail which branches off of the canyon and follows a deep creek up into the hills.
The path is a gentle but steady climb with almost 450 foot elevation gain in the 2 miles to the turnaround point. There are enough rocks to make the path tricky in spots but we trekked along at a decent pace. The clear waters rushed along in the narrow Gulch between high limestone cliffs covered in tall pines and thick moss by the creek.
Lulu made a few sidetrips down to the creek to cool off and have a big drink.
We had the trail to ourselves and it was a beautiful and tranquil hike with all of the natural beauty.
At the turnaround spot you can continue on for another 8 miles to theBig Hill trails which is another place I have hiked and run often.
The hike back down was quick and we were both tired afterwards.
Back to volunteer work tomorrow and 2 more days.
