The Russians do not need a visa to Serbia, therefore, being in Sofia, you can go there at least every day) The main thing, it would be for what. For example, to buy a real French cognac for almost free or to look at the fortress Momchilov grad in Pirot. The fact is that Pirot is the largest Serbian city from the nearest to our side of Bulgaria. Only 90 kilometers from Sofia.
The Sophians go there to take a walk around the market and buy meat cheaper and more tasty. There is an opinion that Serbian meat and products, in general, are much better than Bulgarian ones, because Serbs are not members of the European Union.
In this publication I want to show how this town looks - Pirot. Of course, this is not all, but at least something.
Pirot stands on the Nishava River and has 40,000 inhabitants.
As a settlement this place exists since the second century of our era. There were Roman fortifications, and in the third century they built a city in their place. In the 9th century, Pirot was a member of the Bulgarian Kingdom. The name "Pirot" was first mentioned in the 14th century. It is commonly believed that it came from the word "pirgoth", which means the tower. They say the remains of this watchtower were still on the edge of the city in 16-17 centuries, and then finally collapsed.
Pirot was occupied by Serbs in the Russo-Turkish war, and then, according to the San Stefano peace treaty, he moved to the Bulgarian principality. True, the terms of this treaty operated only a few months (then there was the Berlin Treaty) and the Serbs "did not have time" to give this town to the Bulgarians.
What strikes the eye in south-eastern Serbia is the abundance of antiques on the streets :-)
Of course, this is from poverty. This part of Serbia is much poorer than the one where Belgrade is located. Here, prices are much lower and rarities on the roads ride, and the buildings are amazing with their authenticity. In general, there is something to see. And, really, delicious food. I recommend.
Thank you for your time and attention.
