When I was a Kid around 5-7years old, my dad sometimes brings me to Old Cathay Cinema in Kota Kinabalu to watch cartoons movies, a very vivid thing I forever remember is every single time after we bought ticket, dad always bring us (my bro and sis) to the car park, there is a small wooden shack (half built), my dad had to bend down to get it . Its the Sotong Tumbuk or in English is called Dry Mashed Squid. It was the best of the best, I remember it was only RM1.50 for a large quantity. It was childhood snack for me, the aroma smell of the squid freshly cook and mashed, serve mix with their special sauce. That's was the best snack while watching your movie.
Unfortunately, Cathay Cinema was burned in the early 90s, and the wooden shack also dismantles immediately, there goes my childhood snack. Since then, I never had this snack for such a long time, only those you can buy in Supermarket "Dafa Sotong", but the textures and smells are totally different from the original squid itself.
A few days ago, myself, ,
,
and
went to inspect the San Damiano Boys Hostel for a Charity event. please click Here to check out the post.
After the visit inspection, we went to Tamparuli town to have our Lunch. Tamparuli is also famous for the handmade noodle, similar to Tuaran Noodle, Beaufort Noodle. I had tasty Tamparuli Fried Noodle. While waiting for our food, I and step out to take a fresh air and I suddenly saw something at the corner of my eyes. It was the Sotong Tumbuk, Dry Mashed Squid, I was STUNNED actually, I was like a KID again, inside me was jumping for joy, it been a long time I look for this. Immediate instinct went up to talk to the Uncle, I told him that this my childhood snack, he answers me " ME TOO" ....haha lol!!! It was like a kid picking out Candy from the shop, but this is Squid .... haha!!!
each of us bought a small bag RM5.00 (Big will be RM10.00), as we gonna have our Tamparuli Mee, we don't want to spoil our lunch, we buy to taste. It was 99.99% close to the ones i had during as a kid, really reminiscence the old wooden shack. We tried two type, one is the original and the other is with his special sauce. I Love Both actually, it was tasty and bitefull.
This Sotong Tumbuk really a lost legacy if no one pick's up the trade. It will be those in supermarket type Dafa brand closes to taste. I hope in the future, there will be new blood to learn this trade from the uncle. Let's hope and pray for this uncle health and long life longevity.
