'Scribblers and Artists'
I could never figure out what sort of a need hides behind the urge to leave a signature on a train wagon. Everything under heaven has a reason but I could never fully comprehend this particular form of self-expression, some might call vandalism.
I inquired with the scribblers, who believe to be 'artists', about their hobby. They were not stingy with explanations as to why they do it. Apparently, it is about the thrill of being caught, mixed with an urge to leave a mark in this world. A teen rebellion, perhaps? Lack of direction, as well? Nothing better to do?
A game of ego is what I believe tops it all. Not sure if you notice but all of these are only overblown forms of signatures. They literary signed the train wagons. This practice comes from the early beginnings of street graffiti when one 'tagged' a wall and 'reserved his right' to draw on it later on and evolved into drawing the actual signatures.
In time, less and less art-proficient people started buying spray paints and pretended they could draw, the whole thing became about 'tagging', not about coming back to actually draw something over the tag. No sane person can mind a beautifully painted graffiti over some grey, devastated building. If trains were made beautiful with some awesome imagery, I would really love it and enjoy it. There is a difference.
Anyway, no matter of the effort, the number of security cameras turned on, who can stop a teenager from fulfilling wild plans? High fines and organized infiltrations would make sense and would yield results but there is so many real crime going on that we should probably just leave the kids alone and be thankful they're just scribbling the train cars, not robbing gas stations or killing each other over nothing.
