Perhaps one of the most respected bassplayers in mainstream and jazz scene is probably Marcus Miller. He is well known also by the non- bass – junks :). In fact Marcus Miller was (besides Mark King) my first introduction with slap-bass. Did Mark King had the real slap-reputation but a kind of poppy and plopping sound, Marcus Miller had (and still haves) a clean bright sound with his slapping technique. In 2007 I went to a concert of Marcus in Paradiso Amsterdam, Paradiso is my favorite venue in the Netherlands. It is not too big, a great architecture and often the sound is great.
I went there together with (again) my friend Danny, we first went for a bite to eat (Amsterdam has got some great foreign restaurants like Thai, Vietnamese). The gig was great, though the mixer of the music didn’t do a really great job. The sound was way too loud that was a pity. But we enjoyed ourselves very much.
On drums there was Poogie Bell, a great drummer with such a funky but spot-on drum technique. After the gig I went on the photo with him, a nice (quite little) humble man.
I remember his guitarist, Dean Brown, who has an very expressive way of playing. But he nailed those Jazzy solo’s like a boss.
I really enjoyed seeing the master live at work. He is blessed with so much musicality. He really is the conductor of his own band…
In this clip Marcus plays Panther, a great songs of which you really can see (and hear of course) how great this guy is.
One of a kind musician, but listen to the rest of the band....unbelievable
