God does not permit polygamy. This was evident in the lives of David and Solomon, who faced consequences for practicing it. While as kings they had the authority to take multiple wives, this did not align with God’s will. David faced punishment when his actions led to the death of a child, a result of his sin. Similarly, Solomon later experienced God’s disfavor because he misused his power and allowed his many marriages to turn his heart away from God.
1 Kings 11:3 states: “And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.” God was angered by Solomon’s actions. Although humans have the freedom to make choices, these choices can lead to negative consequences when they go against God’s instructions (Deuteronomy 30:19).
As such, Christians are called to avoid polygamy. A believer should marry only one wife in order to live a peaceful life and honor God.
