Being a first generation American I did not really get into American music until I was a teen. However, I listened to a lot of rock music as a child. My Jamaican parents had an affinity for the genre. In the background of my life growing up I would hear Reggae, Dance Hall and Soca music, but I would also hear old rock music sprinkled in between. Even today my hip hop songs are heavily influenced by Rock. With how much Rock music was a part of my life it is strange that I don’t know much about the history of the genre.
Today I woke up to a google alert saying that Fats Domino has passed away at the age of 82. He died of natural causes. I decided to take a moment out of my day and watch a PBS documentary about his life. A small gesture to honor someone that contributed and influenced an art form that has permeated my life.
