An International Walk on the Smuggler's Trail

The Smuggler's Trail connects Bavaria in Germany with Tirol in Austria. In the not too distant past border guards were stationed on both sides of the border to enforce immigration and customs laws. On the East side of the river there is a road, and on the West side there is a trail that got the nickname Smuggler's Trail -- and it stuck. About half way along the trail there is another trail that leads down to the river and a footbridge.
Here there is a lovely Gasthaus and a locally famous church that was erected around the year 1710. According to lore a woman was passing through the valley when she heard a huge boulder thundering towards her. She called out to Maria for help and the boulder split in two and she was miraculously saved. The church was build directly on the spot, and there is an opening through the split in the boulder that leads to a door to the church.Der Schmugglerweg verbindet Bayern mit Tirol. In der nicht allzu fernen Vergangenheit wurden Grenzschutzbeamte auf beiden Seiten der Grenze stationiert, um Einwanderungs- und Zollgesetze durchzusetzen. Auf der Ostseite des Flusses gibt es eine Straße, und auf der Westseite gibt es einen Pfad, der den Spitznamen Schmugglerweg bekam. Etwa auf halbem Weg entlang des Pfades gibt es eine Abzweigung, die hinunter zum Fluss und zu einer Fußgängerbrücke führt.
Hier findet man ein schönes Gasthaus und eine örtlich berühmte Kirche, die um das Jahr 1710 errichtet wurde. Nach einer Überlieferung ging eine Frau durch das Tal, als sie einen riesigen Felsbrocken hörte, der auf sie zu donnerte. Sie rief Maria zur Hilfe und der Felsblock trennte sich zwei Hälften und so wurde sie auf wundersame Weise gerettet. Die Kirche hat man direkt an dieser Stelle gebaut, und es gibt eine Öffnung durch den Spalt im Felsblock, die zur Kirche führt.

As I took these photos this water was a beautiful river in Austria near the German border, but soon thereafter this water became part of lake Chiemsee, and continues on its never ending journey. Water is wondrous, it isn't simply fluid and soft. It can be as hard as stone, or part of the air we breath. During the Ice Age it formed this region and carved out the Chiemsee. Bei der Fotografie geht es um Perspektive, wie im Leben. Als ich diese Fotos nahm, war dieses Wasser ein schöner Fluss in Österreich, aber bald danach wurde dieses Wasser Teil des Chiemsees, und es geht weiter auf eine nie endende Reise. Wasser ist ein Wunder, es ist nicht einfach flüssig und weich. Es kann auch steinhart sein, oder ein Teil der Luft, die wir atmen. Während der Eiszeit hat gefrorenes Wasser unsere Landschaft dramatisch verwandelt und formte auch den Chiemsee.
