Opportunities Comes To Those Who Seek Them
A few months ago, the dentist who I work for told me about how there were a bunch of recruiters looking for for minorities at the NDA(national dental association) national convention that was to be held this weekend. There was no guarantee that I would gain anything from attending, but I realized there was a chance that if I met the right people, I would be able to create connections and opportunities that would further strengthen my chance of getting into dental school.
So, without hesitation I scraped all of the money I had, and used some credit to book a hotel and flight down to Dallas for this weekends convention.
It has been a long day so far with the early flight, time change, and going through the logistics of registering and checking in, but I finally feel comfortable here in Dallas. I am currently by myself in an unfamiliar city as an undergrad, surrounded by dental students and dentists, which is a situation I thrive in! This is because I have the gift of gab, which basically means I'm a people person, and I flourish situations where I am thrown in the crowd to fend for myself!
I already met some pretty influential dentists in the community and have made connections with a few dental students from the various schools I've applied to. The real test will be tonight, where we all will be attending a mixer and go out on the town. Because I'm alone here, even the gift of gab will limit the amount of exposure I can have with the community here, but in a upbeat setting, I can essential become a chameleon and bounce between different groups effortlessly. I
