Being situated in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula, Bosnia and Herzegovina and its mountains have been situated throughout history on the crossroads of different civilizations that have left their characteristics. The most striking remnants of the past are necropola known as Stećak - [stetɕak] - monumental medieval tombstones from the Middle Ages that can be found even at altitudes near 2,000 m AMSL (above mean sea level).
