9-11 was a day that started out fairly normal here at my house except for the getting up extra early to get hubby off on his trip to D.C.
At the time I was cleaning up the kitchen and had the idiot tube playing in the back ground for noise and had just poured another cup of coffee and sat down for a short break when the tower was hit.
It was like watching a train wreck and then the second was hit and my gut knew life would never be the same for my america again.
Prior to this event we as a family never considered having a cell phone (and it still took years before I did), and then the call for all flights to get grounded (remember hubby went to airport), so without knowing if his flight had already took off nor where he was at the moment (on ground or in air) I poured another cup and prayed.
I did a lot of reflecting that day.
The airport would not disclose any information, his boss called and asked if he was still at home and then went into panic mode when I told them nope he had left for the airport hours earlier, his voice reflected extreme concern and demanded I call him if I heard from hubby (same boss earlier in the past I told to screw off, I did not work for the gooberment when demands were made of me), this lasted for about an hour before he had several others calling to see if I had heard from him, same reply to them, I have heard nothing yet.
12 long hours went by....
About 10:00 PM that night I get a call from hubby, he is at work, suitcase in truck and no idea when he will be able to get home (gooberment higher ups had him brought from the airport to job. (Yup they do shyt like that). He had no idea what time it was nor if it was daylight or dark and wanted me to know he was still breathing (standing joke between us knowing the marine guarding the door had orders to kill them all) and that he would keep me updated as he could when he could.
He made it home the next day and crashed for 12 straight hours... And the rest of the story most of America knows...
Today he is handing in his papers, so I feel safer to tell this story of ours, we discussed this earlier tonight and the reason for him holding off for so many years past when most retire is he has always been the one to make sure those troops on the ground had someone willing to fight for everything they needed and many times those with the stars learned to respect he would not give on those kids safety.
So today Change is coming here, wish us well and pray for our troops that another will take over the reins to insure they always have whatever they need to remain safe.....
