Father's day, one of the special occasion that everyone celebrates around the globe. This is the moment when children remember how great their fathers are. Sharing stories about why their fathers are superheroes and the best and how grateful they are to have them as their father. This is also the moment when they ask for forgiveness for being stubborn, and lazy, and to let them know how much they love their father. The moment to celebrate and honor our great fathers. But how about the children who no longer have a father? Perhaps never had a father? What would be father's day would mean to them?
The growing number of children who don't have a father and being raised by a single Mom is becoming a challenge to our society. Mothers turned out to be a father as well who would go into multiple jobs to provide their children needs. But what's really happening? Children lost their fathers for many reasons. And I would say I am one of the many children who grew up without a father.
We used to be a happy family. We owned a small photography studio. My Mom was a lady photographer and my Dad does the lamination of the photographs. Lamination was the old way to preserve the photographs by attaching it into a piece of wood and cover it with chemicals. The photographs could last decades and unbreakable unless it's burned since it's made of wood. My Mom loves to capture our precious moment together and my Dad did the lamination and hang the final product on our wall. It attracted many customers thus our photography and lamination business went well. During weekdays my Dad would bring us to a restaurant where there's a playground so could really play. It doesn't matter even the restaurant is 2 hours far from our town, he would prepare our tricycle on dawn so we can leave our house early. They also used to surprise me with toys and candies. They said I'm a sweet and a nice kid thus Santa Claus would bring me a gift on Christmas. I was so excited to wait Santa every Christmas but I always fell asleep. Mom and Dad would just wake me up and the gifts were already there! Wow! There were huge boxes of gifts! Santa really loves me!
Until one-day things suddenly changed. Dad and Mom always fight each other. I always saw Mom crying and Dad sometimes doesn't go home. My Mom brought me to my Grandparents and I heard that Dad sold our house and other properties without my Mom's consent. My Mom appealed to change my last name and use hers. I was so confused during that time and was very sick. Hearings were held on the court and because I was only 5 years-old the custody was given to my Mom. My Mom and Dad got separated. It was also the last time I saw my Dad.
About ten years ago, while cleaning our storage room, I found the laminated photos made by my Dad. It was a photo of a happy family. Together are the toys they bought for me and Santa's gift. Suddenly, I missed my Dad but I don't have any news about him since they got separated. I can't help to feel envious of seeing my classmates with their Dad during PTA Meetings and especially during Graduation day where fathers will escort their daughters on their grand march. However, I had my Mom who stands as a father to me and to my sister. Lately, I got a news from our Aunt that she saw my Dad. He already has his own family with grandchildren already. She said he was too old already and looking skinny. Now I'm wondering if he would still remember me if we see each other again. They said I exactly look like my father. He might not be able to recognize my face right away but I know in his heart he will and I'm still hoping for the day to see my father once again.
Happy Father's Day to all the Dad out there!
