I have always wondered what it would feel like to do something outside my comfort zone, to explore even a small part of it and say, “Oh, I made this.” But the negative voice in my head always pulled me back, making everything seem more difficult than it really is.
That changed recently when I decided that, against all odds, I would pick up an old art skill I was practicing as a kid. So today, I am sharing a simple fruit(s) painting I made for the Hive learners #creative-sunday campaign.
Materials Used:
Sketchbook

Drawing pencil and sharpener

Black ink pen

Sets of coloured pencils

Process
The first step was sketching out the shapes of the items I wanted to draw: an apple, a slice of watermelon, a cucumber, and a cayenne pepper. The lines were not perfect, but I kept going anyway.

Next, I began the main colouring process. I used a light red coloured pencil to colour the inner part of the apple, followed by green for the small leaf on the side and brown for the stalk.

After that, I moved on to the watermelon slice. I coloured the outer part with a dark green pencil and used white for the middle layer. Then, I went in again with the same light red pencil to create that juicy look of the edible part. Finally, I used a black ink pen to illustrate the seeds.

For the cucumber, I used a grass green coloured pencil and finished by colouring the bottom with yellow to add a bit of contrast.

I then coloured the cayenne pepper with a light red pencil and finished it off with green at the calyx.

Final Look

To complete the piece, I outlined the entire drawing with a black ink pen. This made the painting more defined and pronounced. I also added my name as a watermark.
Even though this artwork is simple and not complex, it means a lot to me. It reminds me that I am capable of creating beautiful things with my hands as long as I am determined. Seeing the process photos from start to finish motivates me to keep practicing and improving on this skill and I hope I will.

This painting was inspired by the meals prepared in my home during the festive period. I decided to sketch and paint some of the perishable fruits in our kitchen that were used to make those simple meals like salad and jollof rice.
