I consider myself a friendly and tolerant host to all critters who wish to seek shelter and sustenance in my garden. My precious basil plants alone have served as lodging for the likes of Daddy Long Legs and Froghoppers. Well, imagine my surprise when I step out to check on my basil plants and find this giant mess!
And of all places, in the very same plant that is currently (still) housing my two exemplary resident Froghoppers—what have they done to deserve such a messy neighbor?
Long story short, since he did eat through 3-4 leaves in one night (he wasn’t there the previous day) it was not feasible for me to allow him to stay. I removed the leaf upon which he was located, and after taking a few pictures of him on the table, I transported the leaf and its passenger to an area of tall grass outside my garden.
So here is more of the carnage in pictures…
(My beautiful basil plant covered in caterpillar urine and feces!)
(Close up of epic “poop stack” which I am both fascinated with and grossed out by.)
(Fabulous coat-pattern of world’s most ungrateful caterpillar.)
(Facial hair of world’s least hygienic caterpillar.)
(Weird underside of the world’s worst house guest.)
