#It's Braai time!
With Monday being a public holiday in South Africa, we saw the opportunity to invite some people over for a braai. So invited some people and so did I.
Now I know I talk about and showcase the Braai quite a bit, but this was also different for an important reason... but I will get to that.
So in essence a braai is a way of making food, but it is also a way of life cultural thing. "To braai" is to cook food on a coal fire. We do this by making a wood fire and then braai on the grille. Some people braai with charcoal, but many of the more "traditional" people would tell you that a real braai must be done on a wood fire!
You can braai on your own or with the family at home.
However, the "have a braai" means to have a braai party. It means people coming to visit. It means people bring their drinks and whatever they are contributing to the fire and for everyone to spend hours with conversation and music.
In our family, it means that there will be guitar playing and singing as well. Often, it means dancing though right now with Claire's injury, that will have to wait, though it is getting better.
So it is like everyone is having their dinner at your house but they bring stuff that can be cooked on the fire. There are certain things that the host generally does.
So what do we do to host a braai? Let me show you!
Hosting the Braai
Of course, the host provides the fire! I stocked up on firewood. It is too expencive for me to go to Checkers or Pick n Pay and buy a bag of wood for R49 with 30 pieces of wood in them. Instead I go to a vendor on the side of the road and gram 100 pieces for R130. Much better!
The hosts generally then do the salads for everyone. Sometimes someone will bring a salad. Often its just a communication thing, arranging to bring something they make that they want other people to enjoy.
Yes, all South Africans that braai are Foodies. All these provisions is also extending hospitality and generosity to the guests and to the hosts.

made two salads. A green salad with avocado and a potato salad. Our potato salads are done with mayonnaise. There are some HEATED debates on what is permissible in a potato salad, but they are generally divided between savory and sweet lines.
We have the savory one and will need to make a Foodie post about how she makes hers!
We also provide the table with garlic bread that is cooked in tinfoil over the fire. I did not take photos of these.
Accidental Hive meetup? 6 Hive accounts present!
And no, I am not just counting easy here because my 3 kids are on here. Nope was at his dad and
has gone camping with a friend of his in Lambert's Bay.
So from our home it was myself, and our daughter
. Then
and his wife
where there as well as
!
Thus 5 adults and 1 kid from Hive!
Yes, and I have braaied before but it was the first time he and
met. Thus my writing partner for the chain story for Book of Space Lore as well as my writing partner for the other chain story Mortis Custos all in one place.
Of course we spoke about Hive... we tried not to go on about it too much, but it was great that we could also talk about Hive face to face. We have 2 or 3 potential additional people joining Hive, we shall see!

Meanwhile the adults chat, drink and the kids run around and play.

Look at them running. Some kids had not known each other and after a short while ignoring each other, they begin to play. Sorry boys, these kids trashed your room! 😅

The sun setting. On the left is
and second on the left is
.

And so the braai begins. Chicken thighs, chicken sosaties and "oepsies" which are sausages wrappen in bacon. Also two sauasages for a starving teenager. Haha!

gave me a hand because there was a lot of stuff to braai!

And I mean a lot! I did the marinaded stuff that I really need to make a separate Foodie post about. It was delicious!

Once stuff gets done we can put it in the oven at a low heat just to keep it all warm.
Camera Roll

Getting late. There is Nic, my long time friend giving
some light so he can see what's going on.

and
chatting away.

playing on her guitar looking all beautiful and stuff. ❤️❤️❤️
And there you have it! A wonderful final to our 6 day break!
