7 But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house. I will bow down toward your holy temple in the fear of you. 8 Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before me. (Psalm 5:7-8, ESV)
Greetings to you dear one. Today we are taking this text from the book of Psalms. In this text we shall consider the importance of grace in our relationship with God and also take a look at David's prayer in verses 8, where he asked the Lord to lead him in his righteousness and mak his path straight before him so that he could be able to follow the word of God in obedience.
All humans were alienated from God when our grandfather Adam ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. From then, we became conscious of sin and Satan had a control over our will towards sin. Man had become totally depraved and nothing from man can be considered as acceptable to God, except repentance and faith in his work of salvation.
Because of this gulf that was created between God and man, man had no good relationship with God as it used to be in the garden of Eden. The only thing that a holy and just God could do for man was to exercise his justice and condemn man. But there was a promise of the coming God-man who would abridge this distance. He is the person of Jesus Christ and without whom no one is at peace with God.
This Person of the Trinity came and did the work of redemption. So that now, all those who believe have an access to the presence of God because of the sacrifice of his son Jesus Christ. And it's from this redemption, that we can confidently enter his presence without condemnation. So we see David, although he didn't live in the time of the Spirit, where one can be forgiven by virtue of Christ's work, was still enjoying the blessings to come. As a great sinner David, like all of us didn't have any chance to enter the presence of God.
But what do we hear, "through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house". Great news for him and for us who have received this great salvation from God. We have the chance to approach the throne of grace and have a relationship with our Master and Savior Jesus Christ. We go there not by virtue of our own perfections but by the perfection of our Intercessor, Jesus Christ. He has covered us with his blood in such a way that God doesn't see us in our sin, but sees us as cleansed sinners with the apparel of righteousness. That's why the writter of Hebrews said that
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:15-16, ESV)
In his presence alone lie grace and mercy. We can all go there because of Christ. No one is prevented from enjoying this magnanimous grace which gives us life within it and fellowship with our Creator and Savior Jesus Christ. Are you afraid of his presence? Don't be. It's because of this fear that he sent his son to pay the debt so that you can approach him debt-free and be with him eternally. Let Christ be your confidence. He is enough to be trusted as the Savior who will never fail us.
Is there any sin that prevents you from coming to his house? Don't be friend. It's because of this that he became a man and suffered death, even a shameful death on the cross. Don't make his work become vain to you. Repent and believe in him as your Master and he'll accept you into his presence. The Gate is wide open, and everyone who believes will enter and be washed and made as white as snow. After which we shall all cry "Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before me"
After he had cleansed us, he is not going to leave us alone. But rather, he will mould us into his image for his glory. He will lead us by the hand and teach us his ways so that we will be able to obey his statutes and perform the will of him,(Ezekiel 36:27, ESV). Remember that it's always going to be his righteousness and not ours. Our means of acceptance into his family is not by our doings. It's by his righteousness. He is going to lead us in his perfect ways as Paul said that
I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose. (Galatians 2:21, ESV)
Let your means of entrance into his presence forever be by grace. "But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house", said David. He knew that in himself lies no good thing for him to base his acceptance on. But by grace and mercy, he was accepted into God's family.
