A Sadhu literally means one who practises a Sādhana.
Meanwhile, Sādhana (Sanskrit साधन; Tibetan: སྒྲུབ་ཐབས་, THL: druptap; Chinese: 修行), literally "a means of accomplishing something". So a Sadhu is a person that practices a means to accomplish something, which is to achieve Moksha.
Thus, Sadhus shall endure an extreme ascetic lifestyle. Most have very few or no possessions, survive by food and drinks from leftovers that they beg for or is donated by others.
Whether the person I encountered a random hobo or a Sadhu or an Awliya, no one knows. We are not the judge, jury and executioner. No one can be Judge Dredd.
