Hyang was a Malay and Nusantara(javanese, Sundanese, Balinese, etc.) spiritual concept which exist before Hinduism came to the shores of Nusantara from the Hindu lands. The word itself persist even after the Malay, Sundanese and Javanese ancestor converted to Hindusim, Buddhism and Islam. We still call our prayers as Sembah Hyang or literally as the worship(sembah) of the Hyang(GOD). The heavenly realm was known as Ka-Hyang-an or the Heavenly state like how the Malay refer to the government to this day as Ka-Raja-an or literally Kingly state or the modern day government. Ancestors of the Malays are called Mo-Hyang and love is Sa-Hyang. The significant of the Hyang lost to time as the word itself lost into a single word like sembahyang, kayangan, moyang and sayang.
Who was the Hyang changes as new ideas came to the people of Nusantara. No one really knows before Hinduism came who was exactly the Hyang, but academics of various field hypothesized that it was the ancestor during the time where most were animist. It was believed early humans were animist, but the discovery of the Piraha in the Amazon proves some primitive people were even Atheist without the concern of the idea for any divinity.
Sang Hyang Tunggal or Sang Hyang Widhi was the Supreme God of the Hindu pantheon even to this day especially in Bali where Hinduism is still practiced. Also known as Acintya (Sanskrit: "the unthinkable", "the inconceivable", "he who cannot be imagined"), also Tunggal ("One","Unity"), hence the title Sang Hyang Tunggal. The same as Hindu, Brahman(not to be confused with Brahma), the origin and end of all things and consciousness that pervades everything.
In Javanese mythology, Sang Hyang Tunggal through his consort Dewi Rekatawati laid a shining egg. The shell turned into Sang Hyang Maha Punggung(Togog), the egg white turned into Sang Hyang Ismaya(Semar), and the yolk into Sang Hyang Manikmaya(Batara Guru). Togog looks after the giant race, Semar looks after the human race and Batara Guru led the gods in Kahyangan.
