Of late, I have been enjoying exploring the "3 Principles", a way of understanding the way that we think, as coined by Sydney Banks. If you haven't heard of the 3 Principles before it might be summarised as:
"Inside-Out Thinking"So the 3 Principles posits that there is universal intelligence (1) the Mind) and from this comes 2) Thought and finally how we feel or experience the world (3) Consciousness). So everything that we experience comes from universal intelligence and how we interpret this through our own thoughts. We can better understand our thoughts by noticing our feelings. If we feel angry, we must be having angry thoughts.
The powerful effect of this understanding is that it means that YOU must be making yourself feel angry by having angry thoughts. No-one can MAKE YOU feel angry. This is totally opposite to how most people understand life. They believe that stuff happens to them and this then makes them feel and therefore act a certain way. This is outside-in thinking. Others might call it a 'victim's mentality'. It rarely leads to happiness and self-acceptance.
A further aspect of the 3 Principles that is enlightening to me is the concept of allowing universal mind or intelligence into your thinking. So many of us have pre-programmed thoughts and answers or habits to deal with 99% of events that hit us every day. We simply roll out the pre-programmed response despite the fact that there might be a better one: hint, universal mind has all the answers. We just need to let it in....
So to allow us to tap into 'better thinking' as offered by universal mind/intelligence, we need to make our conscious 'thinking mind' slow down and allow space for fresh thoughts to enter. I read a great analogy of a fan running at full speed and trying to flick playing cards between the blades - it's almost impossible, they simply bounce back, rejected. But if the fan could slow down, you can now feed the cards between the blades. So we essentially need to help ourselves get out of our own heads at times to make fresh space for new and better thoughts, ideas, solutions etc.
There's plenty more to the 3 principles, but hopefully this gives you a few insights. It's a very practical approach to influence how you think and to realise that thoughts come and go and that if we slow down we can find new and better ones to help us on our journeys.
