I promised myself that when I grew up, my kids would go to bed the same time I did every night and I wouldn't do anything without them.
It's amazing how many things my parents did which make more sense now.
Our kids are sweet, joyous, fun and an honor to spend my days with.
They also take constant supervision, attention and decisions.
When we get the kids all tucked in for the night, it's like flipping a switch. Everything gets quiet. I usually straighten the house and sometimes vacuum so everything will be in order for a new day. And then Ben and I get to spend some time together with no interruptions.
I mentioned to a more experienced mother that I felt a little guilty about putting the kids to bed and enjoying time without them. She's one of those moms who also had her (many) kids with her constantly and loved it, but she looked at me with a little grin and said, "I call that 'survival'."
It's amazing how much of a relief it is to have people you respect tell you things like that.
It's also amazing how much that quiet hour or two in the evening resets my brain so that I'm ready to reenter the whirl of activity starting in the morning. I privately refer to that time as "the Calm". Sometimes Ben and I make up interesting snacks or drinks to try (like this delicious cold and creamy coconut milk and Earl Gray tea concoction I'm enjoying tonight). We listen to audio books or podcasts. This is often when I get a chance to crochet.
All the fun kind of stuff my parents did without me.
Turns out they were onto something after all. And I tell my kids the story about when I was small so they can smile sheepishly down the road when they find themselves doing the same thing.
