MAZDASPEED was founded in 1967 under the name "Mazda Sports Corner" as an independent racing team and tuning operation led by Takayoshi Ohashi. MAZDASPEED is perhaps best known for their success in the 24 hours of Le Mans, as their creation, the 787B, won the race in 1991.

MAZDASPEED offered several limited-production touring kits (A-Spec, B-Spec, C-Spec, etc.) for MAZDA models, including the AZ-1, FAMILIA, LANTIS, MX-5 Miata, MX-6, and RX-7. Each of these kits offered a different exterior appearance and different performance parts.
